چکیده

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established treatment for Parkinson’s disease (PD). The success of DBS is highly dependent on electrode location and electrical parameter settings. In this study patient-specific computer models of DBS were used for postoperative follow-up in three PD patients who suffered from stimulation induced hypomania, dysarthria, and uncontrollable laughter respectively. The overall aim of the study was to relate the anatomical aspect of the electric field to the effects and side effects of stimulation. The simulations showed the anatomical distribution of the electric field for all the patients and the results were in agreement with previous reports regarding these side effects of stimulation. It was demonstrated that patient-specific models and simulations of DBS may be useful for postoperative followup of DBS. Keywords— Deep brain stimulation, patient specific, finite element method, dysarthria, hypomania

Deep brain stimulation of globuspallidusinternus for DYT1 positive primary generalized dystonia

Background : Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the globuspallidusinternus (GPi) is recommended as a promising technique for the management of the primary generalized dystonia (PGD) with DYT1 gene mutation. We present the first report of DBS results in Iranian patients with DYT1 positive PGD.   Methods : Nine patients who suffered from severely disabling DYT1 positive PGD consecutively were recr...

Pallidaldeep brain stimulation for the treatment of DYT6 dystonia: a case report and review of literature

Little is known about the results of pallidal deep brain stimulation (DBS) in DYT6 dystonia. This will be the first report of DYT6 dystonia treated with pallidal DBS from Iran. A 21 years old male patient with DYT6 dystonia underwent bilateral deep brain stimulation. The target of DBS was the sensorimotor region of the posteroventralglobuspallidusinternus (GPi). DBS parameters included an amp...

O10: Deep Brain Stimulation and Psychiatry

The use of deep brain stimulation in psychiatric disorders has received great interest owing to the small risk of the operation, the reversible nature of the technique, and the possibility of optimizing treatment postoperatively. Currently deep brain stimulation in psychiatry is investigated for obsessive-compulsive disorder, Gilles de la Tourette’s syndrome and major depression. This presentat...

Control of epileptic seizures by electrical low frequency deep brain stimulation: A review of probable mechanisms

Epilepsy is the most common neurological disease with no definitive method in treatment. Notably, the main way to treat and control epileptic seizures is drug therapy. However, about 20-30% of patients with epilepsy are drug resistant and require other therapeutic manners. Deep brain stimulation is a new therapeutic strategy for these patients. Conspicuously, there are no clear answers for basi...
